MES is a term from the enterprise world. The established systems are designed for plants with their own IT department, priced accordingly, and need rollout projects measured in years. For a manufacturer with 30 to 300 employees that is not an option, even though the problem is identical.

What an MES actually is

A Manufacturing Execution System sits between ERP and machine. The ERP knows what should be produced and books the result. The machine produces. In between lies the execution layer: which order runs next, who works on it, how long it took, what came out and whether the quality holds.

That layer is exactly what the ERP standard leaves empty. In many plants paper, spreadsheets and experience fill the gap. It works as long as nothing goes wrong, and gets expensive the moment it does.

Native to SAP Business One, not generically connected

Caesar is not a universal MES with an SAP connector. It was built on SAP Business One from the start and talks exclusively through the official SAP Service Layer, the REST and OData interface of SAP B1.

The difference shows in operation: no middleware to run on its own. No data synchronisation where two systems can drift apart. And no upgrade where someone holds their breath, because postings pass the same business logic as an entry in the SAP client.

Born in shift operation

Caesar is used and developed in daily shift operation at Efinger-Instruments. That is why the interface works with gloves on and why a confirmation takes seconds: neither was specified, both were suffered and then fixed.

The MES is complemented by Cleo, a voice AI that answers questions from the shop floor, and Lorica, an IP 65 industrial tablet that carries Caesar right to the machine.

What is the difference between ERP and MES?

The ERP plans and books: what should be produced, what it cost, what is in stock. The MES executes: which order is running at which workstation, how far along it is, what times and quantities occurred, whether quality holds. SAP Business One covers the ERP side, Caesar the MES side.

Is an MES worth it for a plant our size?

The question is less about headcount than about how much time goes into searching, asking and re-entering today. If nobody can say where an order stands without walking the hall, the gap is there. In the demo we work that through on your actual process.

Do we need new hardware?

Caesar runs in the browser on existing PCs and tablets. If a more rugged device is needed at the machine, we offer Lorica as a matching industrial tablet, but it is not a prerequisite.

How long does rollout take?

Considerably shorter than classic MES projects, because the SAP B1 connection is native and nothing has to be installed at the machines. We discuss a realistic timeframe for your case in the demo rather than claiming a number here.

Can we start with one area?

Yes. Many plants start with order control and shop-floor data capture in one area and extend from there. That keeps the risk small and delivers visible value early.
